Welcome to 2012 -- the year Missourians take back our voting rights!
Many thanks to all of you who have volunteered to help with this critical campaign to protect the voice of the people here in Missouri. You understand that the only way to ensure that the will of voters will be honored is to make sure the Your Vote Counts Act qualifies for the ballot and is passed on election day.
We have just 16 short weeks to collect the 200,000 signatures we need to make it onto the ballot, and we can only achieve this goal with your help. Please resolve to be involved!
If you are already collecting signatures, thank you! Now that the holidays are over and the new year has begun, let's make a resolution to ramp it up! Set an ambitious goal for yourself, and let me know how you are doing! Whatever works best for you is great -- whether it is 20, 50, 100, 1,000 or more. If you collect for just an hour and a half every weekend from now until the submission deadline, you will have over 500 signatures. Three hours a week and you'll have over 1,000! My resolution is to collect another 2,012 signatures for a victory in 2012! This should take about 45 minutes a day.
If you have not started yet, now is a great time to get the ball rolling!
- Email us if you need a new volunteer packet.
- Fill out the Secretary of State's circulator form and the volunteer card and send them to our office in the pre-addressed envelope included in your packet.
- Carefully review the ";Rules for Signature Gathering"; and the "Tips for Effective Signature Gathering" documents. Let me know if you have any questions.
- Start by asking your friends and family to sign. This will help you work out an approach that works best for you when collecting signatures from people you do not know.
- Then, send in your signatures!
Here are a few suggestions on how to ask people to sign the petition:
You can keep it simple by asking: "Did you know that the Missouri Legislature overturns more laws passed by the people than any other law making body in the country? Please sign my petition to protect the will of the voters."
Laura explains that: "I'm collecting signatures from registered voters. What we're doing is a voter initiative for the November 2012 ballot. Right now it just takes a simple majority, that's 50% +1 of the legislature to overturn bills that you and I have voted on. What we want to do is an amendment to make that a 3/4 majority vote in the house and senate. This makes them get support from both sides of the isle, or they have a referendum back to the people for another vote. That way they can't mess with our laws so easily. It is more power to the people."
Harry's approach is: "Are you a Missouri registered voter? We are trying to get a citizen's initiative on the November 2012 ballot. This is not about a particular bill, and we are not sponsoring a particular party. Right now it only takes a simple majority to overturn what we the people vote in. We want to make that a 3/4 majority."
Ellie has success with: "Hi, are you registered to vote in Missouri? I'm collecting signatures for the Your Vote Counts Initiative. We are trying to change the way the Legislature deals with the initiative process. Right now when a law is passed by the people, the politicians in Jeff City can overturn or amend that law with a simple majority. We think that threshold is too low when we are talking about overriding the will of the voters; we want to raise it to a super majority, a 3/4 majority. Will you sign?"
I usually approach people with: "Can I grab you for a quick second to sign a petition? I'm collecting signatures from Missouri voters for the Your Vote Counts Act. This will make it harder for politicians in Jeff City to overturn the will of the people. In Missouri, we have the right to collect signatures to put a law on the ballot. Then the people vote on that law. But our legislature can then simply pass a law that overrules the will of the voters. This measure would make it harder for them to do that by requiring that they get a 3/4 majority of both houses or another vote of the people the next time they want to change or repeal one of our citizens initiatives."
Thanks for all your hard work!
