(Springfield, MO) -- The cold didn't stop a ground-breaking campaign Sunday. The campaign aims to make it more difficult for lawmakers to change certain voter-approved rules. The Your Voice Counts initiative is making its way across Missouri. The Your Voice Counts Act would require a three-fourths vote in both the House and the Senate to change or repeal voter-approved initiatives or it would take a vote by the people by referendum.Supporters say the voice of the people should be paramount.

Supporters of your vote counts are rallying across Missouri making a stop in Springfield.

Urging local Missourians to support the initiative.

"There are 24 states that have the state-wide initiative process and half of those states the legislature with a simple majority can overturn the voters anytime. Missouri is one of those states," said Dan Waters, Campaign Director.

In 2008, Missourians approved Proposition A.

A bill that got rid of casino loss limits and raised their taxes, but provided extra money to education, but in 2009, legislators passed a bill that changed the provisions.

A reason why the "Your Voice Counts" initiative is striving to get a new act on the ballot.

"What this will allow the legislation to do is still serve as checks and balance on the legislation process, but just make it difficult for them to ignore the will of the voters," said Waters.

The citizen-backed initiative is campaigning for the November 2012 ballot.

More than 500 volunteers across the state are pushing to collect the 200,000 signatures needed to get on the ballet and they are halfway there.

"Our biggest challenge is to get out there and talk to people and inform them of the reality of the situation and let them know this is a way we can reverse this pattern of legislation overturning a vote of the people," said Bonnie Boime, Petition Coordinator.

Supporters need signatures from six of the nine congressional districts in Missouri.

"The people express their will and the legislature defies that will. They are elected to represent us and so we believe the voice of the people should be paramount," said Boime.

The campaign plans to carry that message throughout the Show-Me State.

Supporters will continue the campaign to St. Charles and St. Louis.
