As a rescue, we are amazed at so many people wanting to buy a so-called "Teacup" puppy. Thus the reason we are writing this piece concerning our views about the phenomenon of so many people wanting a "so-called teacup" puppy.

Puppies aren't toys; they are living breathing babies that need love and attention, not to spend half of their life in someone's HOT purse!

Please take the time to read this and educate yourself! The lives of many little dogs depend on you educating yourself, and others, not to buy into this phase.

Thank you for taking the time to read this!

This is a topic that most assuredly needs to be brought to the attention of perspective puppy buyers.

Let's start out by saying "THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A "TEACUP" PUPPY".

With that in mind, let me say this; It seems as though there is a plethora of people who are insistent on buying tiny puppies in the 2 to 4 pound range. Also commonly referred to as a "Teacup puppy".

The word "Teacup" has been used to merely describe the size of a puppy, meaning it is very small and will probably be under the standard size which is 4 to 7 pounds for the Toy Group, Yorkshire Terrier breed. We cannot imagine anyone wanting anything smaller than that! Their bones are VERY fragile and can be broken by jumping off of a couch, falling off of a bed, being stepped on or worse.

Many breeders, while tacking a whooping price on a puppy, "claim" to breed so called "teacups" as if they were a breed all their own. Don't be fooled! They are NOT a breed of their own.

If a breeder says they specialize in "teacups" RUN, RUN, RUN for the hills! Most "TEACUP" puppies are in reality, a premature puppy.

Most females are bred on the ninth through the fifteenth day of their heat cycles. Eggs can be fertilized for up to 72 hours after any of these breeding's. Therefore, it is possible to have puppies conceived up to a week or so younger than the puppies first conceived in a litter. However, when the first puppies conceived are mature and ready to be born, labor starts and all the puppies will be born, no matter when they were fertilized.

Some of the problems that may be encountered are both genetic and congenital in these tiny babies and the list is a long one.

The risk of open fontanels (soft spot from the cranial bone not forming), portosystemic shunts (PSS- abnormal vessel that allows blood to bypass the liver. As a result the blood is not cleansed by one of the bodies filters: the liver.), hypoglycemia, cardiac problems, collapsing trachea, luxating patellas, Leggs Calves Perthes disease, seizures, hydroencephaly, blindness and digestive problems can be increased in these tiny babies.

Problems such as respiratory problems can remain or worsen throughout their lives. These babies frequently are so fragile that they do not live more than a few years. There have been several tiny Yorkies as adults who still had open fontanels and their owners had to carry nourishment with them all the time. Their vets have felt it unsafe to give a full dose of vaccine so the puppies had to get several injections to be on the safe side.

There is no such thing as a "tea cup" Yorkshire Terrier, Maltese, Poodle, or any other breed for that matter. They simply do not exist. "Tea-cup" is just a marketing ploy given by unethical and unscrupulous breeders to drive up the price of their puppies!

So called "Teacups" fetch anything from $1000 to $10,000! This is ridiculous and shameful! There are a lot of chronically, unhealthy puppies because unscrupulous breeders and puppy mills are inbreeding. Some poor darlings only live for a very, very short time!

They take the little teeny, tiny Yorkies and they breed 2 1/2 pounders with 3 pounders ... well, they’re playing with genetics. You should NEVER breed a female of any breed less than 5 pounds.

PLEASE educate yourselves before buying a tiny puppy whether it is a Yorkie or any other breed. You could be in for months or years of heartbreak not to mention staggering veterinarian bills!

DO YOUR HOMEWORK!!! IF YOU WANT A HEALTHY PUPPY, DON'T FALL FOR THE TEACUP ACT!

Pet store protest heats up in Orland Park

Despite the frigid weather Sunday, things got a little heated during a protest outside an Orland Park pet shop.

While members of the Companion Animal Protection Society were protesting puppy sales outside Happiness Is Pets, 15647 S. 94th Ave., a woman got into an argument with a protester.

Words were exchanged between Michelle Winslow and protester Dianne Arp, who called the Orland Park police.

When police arrived and were talking with Arp, the other woman’s husband, Robert Winslow, approached and tried to talk with police.

After Winslow refused to leave the scene, police had him place his hands up against a vehicle and took his driver’s license.

After police talked to him, Winslow’s license was returned to him and no charges were filed. Emotions ran deep on both sides, so a police officer and a trainee lingered in a car in the parking lot.

CAPS members protested outside the store because two dogs purchased at other stores in the chain have died of distemper, a disease contagious to other dogs.

“They have not been to his breeders. Ron Berning knows he sells puppy mill puppies, and he doesn’t care about the problem,” Arp said.

Berning, of Lemont, owns the Happiness Is Pets chain.

Protesters stood on the sidewalk along 94th Avenue, holding signs and chanting slogans against the chain. They urged motorists to sound their horns if they supported their cause. Several did.

Nancy Malinowski, of Orland Park, braved the chilly weather because she opposes puppy mills, places that breed puppies to put them up for sale.

“I have adopted two puppy mill parents. They’ve spent their lives in cages for five years. Just to see the emotional damage it has done to them ... they don’t know what grass is or how to walk up stairs, just learning how to be a normal dog. They’re really skittish and don’t know how to play,” Malinowski said. “You have to kind of be like a mother hen and teach them how to be dogs.”

Employees at the Orland Park Happiness Is Pets shop declined comment and said Berning was not available for comment.

CAPS spokeswoman Kristen Kaminski, of Manteno, said “the owner refuses to talk about or take responsibility.”

The puppies “are not vaccinated properly, are not taken care of, are fed horribly and are bred over and over until they die, basically,” Kaminski said.

I have a beautiful story I wanted to share with you all. It is a long
one, but worth the read. My purpose of sharing this story is to remind
everyone how working together and putting in a little effort, can be a
magical thing for the dogs we all try to save. This a touching tale of
2 different dogs, whose fate was remarkably changed by people coming
together for the sole purpose of saving their lives.

If you follow my emails, you will probably remember a little black pit
mix named Sugar. She was found as a stray, full of milk, babies
nowhere in sight. She ended up at a St. Louis area animal control
facility. There had been no offers on her, and when we were leaving
one day, we were informed that she as well as 2 others would be
euthanized in the morning due to lack of space. With only 15 minutes
to save their lives, I contacted a rescue friend who agreed to tag
them, and we would work something out for them by the morning. Later
that evening, a wonderful rescue group, Dont Bully My Breed, INC
posted her photo on their facebook page. A woman named Hannah from
Indianapolis, IN fell completely in love. Although she was reluctant
knowing the dog was rather far away, she pursued it anyway. She agreed
to be a foster to adopt, and passed the application process and home
visit with flying colors. Hannah waited patiently while Sugar
recovered from kennel cough and other minor health issues, and we made
arrangements for transport once Sugar had been spayed and vaccinated.
This past Thurs, a friend of mine and I traveled to Terre Haute, IN to
meet with Hannah so she could take Sugar home. Hannah and her friend
Leah drove off with a happy Sugar off to her new life. Sugar is doing
wonderful in their home with the 2 other dogs and couldn't be happier
in her new home! I have attached a picture of her in bed with her new
dog siblings!

Sugar's story is wonderful, but here is where a new story begins.
Saturday afternoon, I received an email from a local rescue friend
Tammi. A friend of hers in Indianapolis, IN runs a car dealrship. They
saw a young male pit mix, huddled in a corner outside, shivering. They
invited him in to the building, where he immediately came out of his
shell. He had some cuts around his neck from his chain, and was
missing the pads on his rear paws. This area is known for the extreme
gang activity, and there is also known pitbull fighting rings in the
area. It is a war zone, where on any given day, a dead body will
appear in an alley somewhere. The man knew he could not leave the dog
there, but had nowhere to take him. They would be leaving work in
about 3 hours, and without anywhere to go, the dog would be released
back onto the vicious streets, where he would likely die from freezing
to death, or picked up to be a bait dog. Knowing I had no rescue
contacts in Indiana, I contacted Dont Bully My Breed to see if they
had any contacts in the area. They were able to provide some contact
info, and I passed it along to Tammi. She contacted them and left a
message, but due to the urgency, we had to continue to work on it. It
was clear to me that I only knew one person in the whole state of
Indiana, who I had met for the first time on Thursday, Hannah, Sugar's
new mom. I thought it was worth a try and sent her a message asking if
any of her friends would be interested in keeping him safe until a
rescue could be found. Within minutes, Hannah called and said her
friend Leah who had come along for the ride on Thursday, was not only
interested in helping, but possibly adopting! They had been wanting to
adopt a rescue dog. I put Tammi and Leah in touch with each other, and
Tammi thoroughly explained that there was no history on this dog and
all precautionary measures that were needed to ensure her family's
safety as well as the dog's. Leah has 3 daughters ranging from 5 to 11
years old, and Tammi covered every aspect of making sure everyone was
protected. Within just a short time, Tammi had been in contact with a
rescue contact who picked the dog up, and began the 45 min journey to
Leah's house, not only for an introduction, but to evaluate the home
setting. As you will see, everything went better than planned. Leah
had immediately gone out and picked up a crate and everything she
needed to invite this dog into their home. This dog is now named
Bruno, and after a nice bath, he is spending this night cuddled up
next to his new parents in their warm, soft bed. Bruno will be getting
vetted next week, and he will now begin a new life of his own.

The moral of the story, is that even when things seem hopeless, reach
out and ask for help. Don't give up on these dogs, because you may be
their only link between life and death. When people work together and
focus their energy on each individual dog, you will see that so many
others will end up with a wonderful fate like these 2. If the rescue
had not posted Sugar on their facebook page, and Hannah seen her
picture, Bruno would not have stood a chance. It is a very small world
we are living in, and each positive action you take, may bring you
that much closer to helping another dog in need.

This was a good week, and I wanted you all to end your week with happy
and positive thoughts as well. Thanks to all of you who work so hard
to save dogs like these, in whatever way you do so. It is these
stories that keep us motivated to keep doing what we do! A special
thanks to Dont Bully My Breed, INC, Hannah, Leah, and Tammi for their
roles in saving these 2 precious babies.

Update On A Great Rescue Organization in St. Louis: ADOPT

Dear ADOPT Supporters,
I wanted send a quick note to keep all of you, our followers, up to date on the exciting things happening with ADOPT! We are doing well and our Board and volunteers have been very productive since we took over in April. We had a busy November and December. In November, we held our first trivia night and silent auction. A little over 300 people attended and we made over $10,000.00. Shortly there after, in early December, we were the featured charity at the Flyball event at Purina Farms. The event was both fun and successful!

ADOPT has been very busy helping Rescue groups rescue animals from JCAC (Jefferson County Animal Control). As a result of what the rescue groups and volunteers are doing, euthanasia has dropped to almost nothing at JCAC the past 4 weeks!!!

We have also been instrumental in helping JT set up a volunteer group to go out to JCAC and help walk dogs and clean kennels on weekends. It is a success getting adoptable dogs and cats more visibility to get rescued or adopted. We are always looking for volunteers to donate their time. Any help would be appreciated. Go to ShelterBuddies on facebook to see the good work these people are doing. We encourage and accept donations to help with costs for vetting, for rescues, boarding, and fosters.

The Jefferson Co. Pet Food Pantry is coordinated under ADOPT, and exists to help people who may be struggling financially with obtaining food for their pets. Debby Mikles is the President of that organization. Debby has been successful in helping many people who otherwise would not be able to afford food for their pets.

ADOPT helps to provide supplies to JCAC when needed. We are always looking for donations to assist us in the purchase of those items and help to offset their costs and provide items they otherwise can't get.

Last but not least, we are actively looking for property to get us on our way to opening a facility in Jefferson Co. We will keep you posted!

Dogs, "Man's Best Friend!"

Well, on Saturday, January 28, Jack F and I, Larry C, will be attempting to find some enthusiastic, compassionate, and responsible humans, to "return the favor."

It's a small adoption event for some of our many furry, four legged "friends," currently residing at the "Granite City APA."

This will take place from 10:00 AM till 2:00 PM, at the Bridgeton, MO PetSmart, (12046 Paul Mayer Ave Bridgeton, MO 63044), for those of you who need that address.

So, if any of our fellow dog lovers have a few spare hours to join us in this endeavor, we'd love to have you. For those who have done this type of thing before, you know drill. For the others, honestly, it's a pretty easy gig, and can be a fair amount of fun, really! And when we're lucky enough to actually place one of these dogs, well, that's a whole other great feeling!

Just so you're clear, Jack and I will do all the "heavy lifting," even though some of our lucky dog walking volunteers will "lifting" and "bagging" some of that, less that pleasant, "brown stuff." (It's all about being a good citizen and being invited back to find even more homes for even more of "our friends!")

It breaks down to this;
With more volunteers we can bring more dogs to the event. With more volunteers we can have more of our dogs out of cages, interacting with us, showing off their personalities to more potential adopters. More volunteers means more dogs find new homes!

I know this is late notification and I know that so many of you do so many other things for these animals, not to mention the other goings on of your lives. But, if you can make it, great! And if not, that's OK too, maybe next time.

Letting us know if you might be able to join us will be greatly appreciated!

George Clooney Finds Joy in Adopting from Animal Shelters

Last December, we shared with you a story George Clooney had written in Esquire magazine about his new shelter dog Einstein – and the amusing hoops he jumped through to get him.

“You see him all beat up in the shelter, and they show how they cleaned him up,” he said upon finding the dog online. “So I called and said, ‘I like Einstein!’ The woman goes, ‘Well, we don’t know if Einstein will like you.’ ‘Well, can I meet with Einstein?’ She says, ‘Yes, we’ll bring him to your house, but if he doesn’t like you, he can’t stay. We have to have good homes for these dogs.’ She sounded very serious.”

Clooney went on to reveal the trick he used to immediately gain Einstein’s love (think food) – and they’re both now living happily ever after.

But one more thing – after his Best Actor win at the Golden Globes, the 50-year-old talked a bit more about his love of shelter pets.

“I’ve always had dogs,” he told the press. “I’ve almost always had them out of the pound. Seems like a good place. They have a lot of them. It brings me a lot of joy to do it and they seem like the happiest dogs in the game. I only have one, but he eats for, like, four.”

Miami Pets Strike Out: Help Our Family Stop Canine Profiling and Save Lives

Jamie Buehrle is married to All-Star pitcher Mark Buehrle. Mark recently signed with the Miami Marlins.

Mark and I have always been avid animal lovers. When Mark was playing for the White Sox, we hosted “Sox for Strays,” a public-service announcement campaign that featured adoptable animals once a month during the baseball season. Before our 18-month-old American Staffordshire terrier, Slater, came into our lives we already had three Viszlas: Diesel, Drake, and Duke.

When it became a reality for us that Mark was no longer going to be playing for the White Sox, so many things started going through our minds. Instead of worrying about what team he would be playing for, what schools our kids would go to, and how to transition our lives to a new city, our biggest concern was ensuring our new city would allow Slater. Doesn’t that seem ridiculous?

Slater is a member of our family. We had always agreed to make sure that wherever Mark ended up playing, Slater would be welcome. So, when Mark had the opportunity to sign with the Miami Marlins we were harshly confronted with Miami-Dade County’s 20-year-old pit bull terrier ban and immediately knew we would have to live a county over, in Broward.

Mark and I are fortunate to have the resources to accommodate Slater. But, it breaks our hearts that so many families are faced with losing their family pet simply because a local government has deemed their dog “dangerous” based on nothing more than appearance.

We can't imagine ever having to give Slater up simply because a city says we can't have him. Not only would we be distraught at that prospect, but our kids would be devastated. So, when Best Friends Animal Society reached out and told us about their legislative effort to repeal Miami’s breed-discriminatory legislation, Mark and I were happy to help however we could, especially after our first-hand ordeal.

House Bill 997 and its companion, Senate Bill 1322, will repeal Miami’s pit bull terrier ban and finally relieve law-abiding families from making unfair decisions about their family dog.

Mark and I encourage Miami-Dade residents and everyone who agrees that it is time to remove this law to ask Florida state legislators to support these bills by signing my petition.

Our family is excited to be in South Florida. After this legislation is passed, we hope more families with good canine citizens will be able to move to Miami-Dade without worry or hesitation.

If your readers haven’t already been asked to sign a YOUR VOTE COUNTS petition, they will be soon. Here’s why it’s so important to sign the petition. In recent years, state legislators have run roughshod over the voters by rewriting or tossing out laws we passed by initiative petition. We have the right in Missouri, as voters, to pass laws. And the legislature should respect those laws just as they expect us to respect the laws THEY pass.

Although the puppy mill (Prop B) law that passed in November 2010 and rewritten by the legislature two months later is just the recent example of insulting the voters’ judgment, YOUR VOTE COUNTS is not just about puppy mills. In 2009, the legislature undid a school funding measure that passed as part of a casino initiative. They are also looking to dismantle a 2006 ballot measure on minimum wage and a 2008 measure on clean energy. Remember Prop C for alternative energy? Voters supported that by a huge majority, but legislators with their own agenda want to weaken it.

What is a day?
There are many ways to answer that question.

A day is 24 hours. A day is how we measure how much time we spend at work. A day can be something we look forward to, a celebration of some kind. But in U.S. animal shelters, a day represents 10,411 lives needlessly lost.

To most people, June 11 is Just One Day. But, June 11 is a day that could change everything for 10,411 companion animals, and a day that can change the world. On June 11, 2012, we could be a No Kill nation.

We are asking animal shelters across the USA to take a pledge not to kill any savable animals on June 11, 2012. For Just One Day, "Euthanasia Technicians" will put down their syringes and pick up cameras. Instead of injecting animals with lethal doses of sodium pentobarbital, they will photograph them and post them on the Internet, on Facebook, on twitter. On June 11, 2012, they will market their animals to the public, they will reach out to rescue groups, they will host adoption events with discounted rates, they will stay open for extended hours, and they will ask their communities to help them empty the shelter the good way.

Instead of going into body bags in freezers, the animals will go out the front door in the loving arms of families. At the end of the day, the shelters will be emptier than when the day started. And, no one will have had to die in order to make that happen. To help them succeed, the No Kill Advocacy Center, Animal Ark and Animal Wise Radio are teaming up to offer shelters the tools they need to be successful.

We have a model press release and promotion plan. We have a guide to adopting your way out of killing. We have adoption promotion posters. And so much more, all sent free of charge to those organizations that take the pledge.

On average, if each animal shelter in the USA adopts out or transferres to rescue groups an extra three animals on June 11, the USA can become a no kill nation, even if it is for Just One Day. And if we can do it then, we can also do it on June 12 for Just Another Day. . .

Another Disguising Unlicensed Breeder Animals Rescued From in Missouri

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. -- Animal care inspectors from the Missouri Department of Agriculture worked in conjunction with the Stone County Sheriff’s Department and the Humane Society of Missouri to remove small dogs from an unlicensed breeder in Crane on Tuesday. Dogs removed include pugs, chihuahuas, shih tzus and poodles.
Following a tip, animal health officers from the Missouri Department of Agriculture visited the home of Annie Hill and identified numerous animal welfare issues, including unsanitary conditions, dogs without drinking water and dogs in need of veterinary care. In addition to the animal welfare issues identified, the operation was not licensed through the Department’s Animal Care Program or the USDA.
Under a warrant obtained by the Stone County Sheriff’s Department, 44 dogs and one cat were removed by the Department’s Animal Care Program and transported to St. Louis by the Humane Society of Missouri. Rescued animals will be placed with licensed shelters and rescues in Missouri, including the Humane Society of Missouri.
ACFA inspectors routinely work with local organizations to rescue animals. Since January 2009, actions taken by the Department of Agriculture have resulted in over 5,500 dogs being rescued.

When euthanasia by gassing works, it can take up to 25 minutes to end an animal's life. It is especially cruel to young, old, pregnant or sick animals -- the majority of most shelter populations.
Running gas chambers is more expensive than comparatively quick and painless euthanasia by injection, leaving less money in the shelter's budget for taking care of animals and maintaining the facility.

There is no excuse for this method of euthanasia to continue in any state.

The little terrier was a nervous wreck and wouldn't even eat without the Jack Russell by her side so they had to be adopted as a pair. New York woman files lawsuit aiming to change a pet’s legal definition, recoup vet bills

When Elena Zakharova looks into the eyes of her puppy as it suffers from bad knees and achy hips, she does not see a defective product to be returned to the store for a refund.

The New York City resident believes Umka, her 1-year-old Brussels Griffon, is a living soul who feels pain and emotion. Now her attorney aims to prove it in court.

Zakharova has filed a civil suit in a New York court against the Upper East Side pet store that sold her a puppy who went on to develop numerous medical complications. The suit seeks to hold the store liable for the dog’s pain and suffering, as well as its medical bills, as if it were a person rather than an inanimate product.

Under New York law, pets are considered “property,’’ but the complaint is trying to change that definition. The ultimate goal is to help shut down the puppy mills, many of them based in the Midwest, that often mass-produce the animals sold in boutique pet stores like Raising Rover, where Umka was purchased.

“Don't call them property anymore,’’ Zakharova’s attorney, Susan Chana Lask, told TODAY.com. “They're not inanimate objects. They’re not tables. They’re not chairs. You don’t just throw them out.’’

“Umka is a living soul with a heart,’’ the suit reads. “She feels love and pain.’’
The ownership of Raising Rover has changed since Zakharova purchased Umka.

“I know nothing about the sale [of Umka]. The prior owner has all the records. We are very careful about where we get our puppies,” Raising Rover owner Ben Logan told the New York Daily News, which first reported the story of Zakharova’s unusual complaint. Logan declined to provide any information about the prior owner.

Zakharova is seeking compensation for past and upcoming surgeries and other medical treatment involved with Umka, which totals at least $8,000. She also wants a full return of the dog’s sale price plus interest since the date of purchase in February of last year. If Zakharova is awarded the money, she will donate it to an animal charity or animal-rights program, Lask said.
New York state currently has a “Puppy Lemon Law’’ that allows buyers to return a sick animal to a pet store within 14 days for a full refund. One objective of that law is to slow down puppy mills’ mass production of dogs that end up having heart conditions and other ailments. However, in a case like Umka’s, the medical issues did not become apparent for months after Zakharova purchased the dog. The suit claims Umka will never walk or run properly again after several surgeries.

“Umka suffers a disorder causing her pain, her legs hurt, she cries when she is in pain, she drags herself with her front paws, [and] she cannot run like other puppies,” the suit reads.

“The Puppy Lemon Law doesn't cut it,’’ Lask said.

If the definition of a pet is changed from that of property to an animate being with feelings, it could substantially change the amount of damages that could be awarded when an owner buys a defective dog born in a puppy mill, according to Lask. That could, in turn, have a chilling effect on pet stores buying animals from puppy mills out of fear of getting slammed with large payouts from lawsuits.

“It’s going to put a number on my dog’s broken hips that you created because you’re negligent, you’re greedy, and you’re mass-producing these puppies,’’ Lask said. “Right now, even if you return it, they just kill it, which is so inhumane.’’

Lask is an animal lover who owns a Chihuahua named Lincoln who was found to have a hole in his skull months after her purchase. That discovery led her to investigate the practices of shady puppy mills. She has waited six years to bring a case of this nature, fielding calls from other pet owners in the past, but felt Zakharova is the perfect client to help correct a larger issue.
The main issue will be proving to a judge that pets are living souls who experience feelings of pain and emotion.

“It’s a leap,’’ Lask said. “Human beings themselves have treated other humans as property in history before recognizing it was wrong. People will say this isn’t a human being, but they have a heart, so it’s not too much of a stretch to ask the courts to change the definition. Then we’ll see how quickly pet stores think twice before buying from puppy mills.

“It’s already a felony to abuse an animal. If I kick my Chihuahua and beat it, I’m getting arrested, so that animal has rights. If they have criminal rights, why not put rights on a damaged leg or a heart condition? If we’re not equating [an animal] to a human being, and we’re not equating it to a table, there has to be something in the middle.’’

Whether the suit is successful or not, it brings to light the practices of puppy mills and their damaging effects on animals and their human owners, animal rights advocates say.

People develop relationships and bonds with these animals, and you see how distraught they are when the animals pass away.’’

A 2011 investigation by The Humane Society of the United States revealed that Raising Rover, where Umka was purchased, was one of 11 upscale pet stores that purchased animals from Midwestern puppy mills with horrendous conditions.

If you are already collecting signatures, thank you! Now that the holidays are over and the new year has begun, let's make a resolution to ramp it up! Laura explains that: "I'm collecting signatures from registered voters. What we're doing is a voter initiative for the November 2012 ballot. Right now it just takes a simple majority, that's 50% +1 of the legislature to overturn bills that you and I have voted on. What we want to do is an amendment to make that a 3/4 majority vote in the house and senate. This makes them get support from both sides of the isle, or they have a referendum back to the people for another vote. That way they can't mess with our laws so easily. It is more power to the people."
Harry's approach is: "Are you a Missouri registered voter? We are trying to get a citizen's initiative on the November 2012 ballot. This is not about a particular bill, and we are not sponsoring a particular party. Right now it only takes a simple majority to overturn what we the people vote in. We want to make that a 3/4 majority."
Ellie has success with: "Hi, are you registered to vote in Missouri? I'm collecting signatures for the Your Vote Counts Initiative. We are trying to change the way the Legislature deals with the initiative process. Right now when a law is passed by the people, the politicians in Jeff City can overturn or amend that law with a simple majority. We think that threshold is too low when we are talking about overriding the will of the voters; we want to raise it to a super majority, a 3/4 majority. Will you sign?"
I usually approach people with: "Can I grab you for a quick second to sign a petition? I'm collecting signatures from Missouri voters for the Your Vote Counts Act. This will make it harder for politicians in Jeff City to overturn the will of the people. In Missouri, we have the right to collect signatures to put a law on the ballot. Then the people vote on that law. But our legislature can then simply pass a law that overrules the will of the voters. This measure would make it harder for them to do that by requiring that they get a 3/4 majority of both houses or another vote of the people the next time they want to change or repeal one of our citizens initiatives."

This pup was evaluated by our trainer who felt that he will need the help of rescue to get safely out of the shelter and had the following comments about him: "This boy is pretty stressed in the shelter. He's very thin and standoffish. During the assessment, he avoided contact initially by retreating, but ultimately would approach and stay near for food. When put on a leash, he tolerated some body handling, but gave a lip curl when I persisted in handling his ears. He showed some early stress signs and then gave a warning lip curl before retreating. He clearly would rather retreat than engage, but he needs to be handled gently until he has established trust. He has no resource guarding and hasn't shown any reactivity to other dogs. He needs a rescue placement where he can relax and establish trust with the handler."

Further evaluation and work with this pup by Judy Liese, one of our very dog-experienced volunteers brought the following comments and evaluation of this pup: "This boy is great! He is VERY underweight, so not sure about prior owners or if "stray" too long. He is very guarded about "touch" and his demeanor struck me that he has experienced "bad touch"......He showed NO aggression to me whatsoever when I attempted full body touch, but simply took two steps back and looked at me like "please don't". I respected his wishes. He took treats extremely gently and when crouched down to give him treats, enjoyed face petting. I enjoyed this dog VERY much and feel this only "concern" with him is how previous humans may have treated him. WHICH IS NOT HIS FAULT! AGAIN..he was NEVER aggressive or threatening in any way with me, just skeptical. I've been back since the handling and he remembers me and seeks my attention. With patience and love (and a TON of food to get his body back in shape), I can almost 100% guarantee that this dog with bond STRONGLY with his person!" Because of his trust issues, this pup will have a very difficult time being adopted out of the shelter in the extremely limited time they will allow him to be safely there. HIS STRAY HOLD IS EXHAUSTED AND WE NEED YOUR HELP TO GET HIM INTO THE SAFETY OF RESCUE NOW TO SAVE HIS LIFE!!

"During the body handling portion of the assessment, he was a bit rigid at first, but allowed all types of handling, and showed no fear or aggression. This boy's distinguishing feature is funny eyes that cross when he looks straight at you."

MY LAB IS CROSS EYED AND I ADORE HIM!! He is your "typical" lab and showed NO aggression whatsoever and took treats well. He did not engage as quickly as some labs do, but in my opinion, he has spent most of his time outdoors without a lot of attention. He is a beautiful dog that behaved quite well and just needs some human attention and interaction. True to lab form, he's always ready to goof around! Did not mind full body touch, seemed indifferent to it.........This guy is just lab, lab, lab....."

Judy assessed him for us and had the following to say about this sweet senior pup. "Sweetheart lap dog. Picked him up out of his kennel and held him a lot. He HAS been held a lot. This incredibly sad 4 y/o female GSD was picked up as a stray on December 30th. She had a rabies tag on which was not registered to her, but may have given the shelter the owner's contact info. They have been trying to get in touch with the owner about Lola, but have had no luck in doing so thus far. She will be on a mandatory 10 day hold which will expire on January 12th. She has been skin tested due to the presence of large areas of hair loss that are found on her body.. Her skin scrapings are negative for either type of mange and her hair loss is thought to be due to severe flea dermatitis. She is currently on antibiotic therapy to treat a secondary bacterial skin infection that is present in some of the affected areas.

Some wonderful insights on this pup were given to us by Judy, who had the following to say about this pup:

"Lola is a poor, sweet shepherd that without any supporting facts can guarantee she has NEVER had "the good life".. It's apparently always been very hard, sad and lonely. Lola appears to be shutting down. She needs, no DESERVES rescue to heal her body (pretty severe flea allergies) and her heart. She appears to have given birth recently, so her poor body is a wreck right now, but with time and TLC could be a beautiful girl! Her eyes tell me she is STILL holding out a small glimmer of hope that humans are not bad. She does NOT like to go outside, in fact, fears it. Only she and God know why that is. She allowed full body touch and took treats very gently. She is on the other spectrum of aggressiveness, she is COMPLETELY docile (too much so). SAVING LOLA IS WHAT RESCUE IS ALL ABOUT!!"

IN HER CURRENT COMPROMISED PHYSICAL AND EMOTIONALLY SHUT DOWN CONDITION, THIS SWEET DOG WILL NOT BE MADE AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION AND MUST BE RESCUED BY HER AVAILABLE DATE OF JANUARY 12, 2012!! PLEASE HELP US SAVE HER LIFE BY TAKING HER INTO RESCUE NOW!!

This pup is in IMMEDIATE DANGER AND WE HAVE VERY LITTLE TIME LEFT TO SAVE HIM!! Chubbs is great and playful with adults and older children, and is a favorite with several volunteers at the shelter. He needs to be placed in a home without other animals and small children.

Here is a very helpful evaluation of Chubbs by our amazing volunteer, Judy, who has probably spent more time with this pup than any of the shelter staff. Please read her comments below about this pup:

"What can I say about my FAVORITE dog at the shelter? He is misunderstood! He LOVES to play and always will pick toys over food. Shows no food aggression and full body handling to him is "playtime"! He loves contact all over...and again, PLAY! He needs a place (no small children or other pets at this time) to get out and get his HIGH ENERGY level sated. When told he was not good with small children, the first thing that occurred to me was quite breed specific. He has a "herding" breed mixed in with his lab-ness and since I have not VIEWED his interaction with children, I question whether he might be "herding" them, as instinct dictates. HE HAS NO BITE HISTORY.....IS aggressive with other dogs. He has established himself as an Alpha (ok, THE Alpha) and needs a good human handler to strip him of his title. I am positive that with more outdoor exercise and play, a lot of his behavior will mellow. I have so much fun playing with him and he has NEVER exhibited aggressive behavior to me...Even if I'm not there for him specifically, I ALWAYS go take him out for awhile, because I love him. If I did not already have 6 dogs, I would foster him in a New York minute. Let him run and play AND ALPHA HIM!!"

This boy has been at a distinct disadvantage at the shelter!! He was reportedly brought in as a stray, but then picked up by a woman who said that he might belong to her boyfriend/husband. Shortly thereafter, he was returned, reportedly because this was not the boyfriend/husband's dog. At the time that he was returned, he was found to be sick. He has now recovered from kennel cough, BUT HIS STRAY HOLD HAS BEEN EXHAUSTED!! During this entire time, this wonderful dog's picture was never posted on the shelter's website so no one knew that he was there!! He is reported to be both sweet and friendly, but very thin.

The following is an evaluation of this pup by our wonderful volunteer, Judy, who had this to say about him:

"The greatest grand old man of all time! Loves full body contact, needs a little work taking treats, but he's awfully skinny so he is probably pretty darn hungry. Pressure of teeth upon taking treats just SLIGHTLY a little too hard, but clearly in no way was trying to harm me. When walking past the rows of dogs to get outside, THIS old guy held his head WAY high and PRANCED! I thought I was at a dog show! Couldn't have cared less about the other dogs, but clearly very proud of himself! HIGHLY, HIGHLY adoptable if age not a consideration, and for an older dog, exhibited a good amount of energy and gentleness."

Groundbreaking Court Ruling Takes Dogs Beyond “Property” Status; Major Pet Industry Groups Not Happy
A Texas appeals court ruling has given dogs increased status over other forms of property. The dog in this photo may actually be worth more than the table he is sitting on now.
A Texas appellate court has made the bold move of effectively taking dogs out of the “property” category and giving them increased legal status. It provides an updated reinterpretation of the law, which traditionally views pets as worth only their market value — like a table or a car.
The Second Court of Appeals in Fort Worth overturned a lower court’s ruling that a couple whose dog was wrongfully euthanized was entitled to damages for only the dog’s monetary worth. The new ruling allows for a dog’s true worth to be considered.
“Dogs are unconditionally devoted to their owners. Today, we interpret timeworn supreme court law in light of subsequent court law to acknowledge that the special value of ‘man’s best friend’ should be protected,” the Court’s opinion stated.
With the ruling, the owners of the dog, Avery, could be entitled to damages for “sentimental” or “intrinsic” value. Avery escaped from his yard and was brought to an animal shelter. They went to claim him, but didn’t have enough money, so they made arrangements to return when they had it. Despite a “hold for owner” tag on Avery’s cage, a shelter employee euthanized him days before his number was up. When the couple came back to pay for Avery’s fee, they got the terrible news.

Ironically, in some instances dogs have not been given the same value even as some forms of property. If someone destroys family heirlooms that are of great sentimental value, even though the heirlooms may be nearly financially worthless, damages can be awarded because of their sentimental value. The new court ruling, for which the appellate justices cited a 120-year-old Texas Supreme Court decision as precedent, gives pets at least the same value as other items that are of negligible monetary value but great intrinsic worth.

“Because of the special position pets hold in the family, we see no reason why existing law should not be interpreted to allow recovery in the loss of a pet at least to the same extent as other personal property,” Justice Lee Gabriel wrote.

The shelter worker who ended Avery’s life will appeal the decision. She will be in some pretty powerful company. Surprisingly — at least at first glance — some of the top pet-industry organizations in the nation are adamantly opposed to the court’s decision. The American Veterinary Medical Association (whose well-done newsletter article is the main source for my post), American Kennel Club, the Cat Fanciers’ Association, Animal Health Institute, American Pet Products Association, and Pet Industry Joint Advisory Council are among those who filed briefs asking the justices to reconsider.

These groups say they fear that the liability from “pain and suffering” claims would cause pet service fees to have to increase greatly and make veterinary care unaffordable for many people with pets.

“If this becomes the law of the land, it will lead to higher costs to own a pet, disproportionally hurting middle-class and low-income pet owners. Who will pay for those higher damage awards? The rest of us pet owners, of course,” said Adrian Hochstadt, AVMA assistant director of state legislative and regulatory affairs. “The obvious consequences will include fewer people being able to own pets and, unfortunately, more animal abandonment.”
Opponents say the verdict “isolates the Second Court of Texas in American jurisprudence and … violated Texas Supreme Court law.” Legal experts say the case will likely end up in Texas Supreme Court. It will be interesting to watch this unfold. If the Supreme Court upholds the appeals court’s decision, what will the implications be across the nation and across animal law? Could it be the start of a sea change as to how dogs are considered and treated? Could it lead to stiffer punishments of those who abuse animals? Would it open the floodgates to frivolous lawsuits?
I was initially disillusioned when I learned that such major pet industry organizations were opposed to what seemed like something they’d support: that the value of a pet goes beyond its market worth. But they see this as opening the doors to all kinds of pricey lawsuits, so I guess I should not be surprised that they’ve come out swinging. I’m very interested in your thoughts on this, Dogsters. Also, if there are any legal experts out there who can weigh in, or who can offer some perspective on the case, I’d love to hear from you.

It has come to our attention that Skechers has filmed a commercial at Tucson Greyhound Park showing greyhounds racing (and losing) against a smaller dog wearing the company’s shoes. Mark Cuban, owner of the Dallas Mavericks, appears in the ad -- which is intended to air during the Superbowl! Please sign this petition directed to Skechers, NBC and Mr. Cuban and ask them not to support the cruelty of dog racing.

At TGP, greyhounds are kept confined in small cages which are barely large

Dogs and dog-lovers alike had reason for celebration on New Year's day in Ireland.
The country, once considered the Puppy Farm of Europe, banned puppy "farming" - aka puppy mills.New legislation went into effect as 2012 rolled around thanks to the efforts of campaigners who had fought to ban the inhumane conditions typically associated with commerical puppy breeding operations.The new laws aim to crack down on breeders who fail to maintain humane conditions for the dogs within their care.
Thanks to the Dog Breeding Establishments Act and the Welfare of Greyhounds Bill, breeders will have strict rules to follow which should ensure that the inhumane conditions of yesteryear can become nothing more than a distant memory.

A rural no-kill rescue is in desperate need of immediate assistance. Dent County Animal Welfare Society (DCAWS) is located in Salem, Missouri and brings dogs to St. Louis for adoption events almost every weekend. http://www.dcaws.org/

Since 1993, DCAWS has been the sole animal shelter in rural Dent County, Missouri -- there is no humane society or APA or any other publically-funded shelter. There is an animal control, but there is no pound -- all animal control dogs come to DCAWS. In a rural county where dog dumping is rampant and puppy mills are all over the place, DCAWS has managed to make Dent County a no-kill county. Now, DCAWS desperately needs help to keep going. The physical shelter is getting old and at the point where it risks not passing inspection. We have land for a new shelter but need to raise at least $200,000 to build the new shelter. The more immediate need is to move about 20 dogs as soon as possible as the shelter is too crowded. We are begging for fosters in or around sSt. Louis for about 20 dog. As a last resort, at this point we are also looking at transferring some dogs to other rescues (all dogs are vetted). We know that most other rescues are full and needing donations as well and we have made it by for the last 19 years, but unfortunately, we are now at a breaking point and are begging for some serious help in order to keep going. Without DCAWS and its very few dedicated volunteers and weekly trips to St. Louis, the dogs (and cats) of Dent County face a dire future. Please help us find a place for 20 or so dogs in the next few days!! This is urgent!! We are seeking adopters, fosters in/around St. Louis, rescues willing to take transfers (all dogs are vetted), and donations!! We could also use some volunteers to make the trip to Salem (probably some weekend very soon) to work on sprucing up the shelter until we can raise the funds to build the new shelter.

Getting A Pet For Someone Else

People are advertising pets as "the perfect gift". Please remember that more than half of those gifted pets will end up abandoned in shelters or on the streets a few
months after they are given. Don't believe me? Visit your local shelter in January and February, or just take the time to ask someone who works there about it. It's disheartening to start the New Year with a flood of new arrivals when you know most of them won’t leave that building again alive. Spouses, boyfriends, girlfriends, and various relatives: PLEASE be sure that the person you're giving a pet to is sure they want it and are ready for the responsibility, time, and money it takes to care for an animal, especially a puppy or kitten. If anything, consider giving an older, trained animal another chance with a new family. PARENTS!!! When you buy your child who is under 18 and still completely dependent on you a pet, you are buying yourself a pet! Legally you are responsible for that animal, so
be ready to pick up the slack if your kids "get bored" with their new pet or
find out that cleaning up poop is gross. Ask yourself if YOU want a pet and if
YOU are able to spare the time a pet will need. Remember: The difference between
a toy animal and a real one is the ability to experience pleasure and suffering.
That cute little puppy or kitten with the bow on his head is a life, and
10-15 year commitment, if you, or your recipient is not prepared, do NOT get
one, as a pup they have some chance of finding a home. If you bring them home, or gift them, and the new "parent" is not ready, you will sign the dog/cat’s death warrant, they will keep them till they are out of the cute stage, then, off to the
shelter.
A pet is a great joy and giving
an animal a home is a deed that can benefit all parties, but only if everyone’s
ready for it. PLEASE don't add to the 6 million plus animals euthanized in
shelters annually by not thinking things through.

Change.org Speaks Up On Petland....

While the puppies in Petland USA stores may look cute in their cages, chances are the puppies have led miserable lives that threaten their health from the day they're born.
Petland USA is the country's largest chain of stores that sell puppies. Most of Petland's animals come from puppy mills, where thousands of dogs are bred again and again to supply the pet trade. Dogs are kept in cramped, unsanitary conditions, and they often lack adequate vet care.
There's hope to stop puppy mill sales at Petland stores. Last month Petland Canada ordered its stores to stop selling puppies, in part due to continuous pressure from animal protection advocates. So Mary Haight, a Change.org member from Chicago, wants Petland USA to do the same. She started a petition on Change.org asking Petland USA to end puppy mill sales in its stores. Walk into any major pet store like Petco or PetSmart, and you won't find puppies for sale. Those stores work with local animal shelters to find homes for the countless animals waiting to be adopted across the country. Yet Petland stores prioritize profit by selling animals from puppy mills, propping up this cruel business.
Puppies bred in puppy mills are often plagued with poor health. Kept in cramped conditions and often housed outside in all types of weather, animals in puppy mills lead a pitiful existence. Puppy mill operators are also known to in-breed puppies, leading to other health and behavior problems.
Each Petland store in the US is an individually-owned franchise, meaning Petland USA's corporate headquarters can't ban puppy sales in stores on its own. But Petland USA can stop any new stores from selling puppies, and a strong statement from the corporation would go a long way to putting a stop to its existing stores that buy animals from puppy mills.

You remember Lucas & his faithful service dog, Juno? Lucas is the 4 year old little boy with the terminal illness MPS. There is no known treatment...there is no cure...and Lucas's life expectancy is only 10 -15 years (go to his FB page Lucas Hembree to see more).

His service dog, Juno, is always by his side. Juno was trained by Lucas's father, after he rescued her from a shelter, where she literally was to be put down in a matter of another few hours. Together, they have formed an inseperable bond.

Life is not the easy, carefree thing it is for most children. The family has gone thru many ups and downs, in fact as Chester Hembree wrote in a note to me, "It seems like for every ounce of good news we get it's followed by a pound of bad news...lol. We've just learned to take what ever happens and make the best of it."

We at the GSDC would like to bring a bit of cheer to this family.

Instead of finding bills in their mailbox, we'd like to fill it with CHRISTMAS CARDS! Holiday greeting and well wishes from around the globe! .... and we need YOUR help!

PLEASE...could you send the family a Christmas card? Let them know, that they are NOT alone in this. Tell them that there are people who truly CARE, this Christmas season. It is said that when animals die they don’t go to heaven, they go to the Rainbow Bridge where they wait for their owners. The area around the Rainbow Bridge is sunny, warm but not too warm, flowers, grass and all the animals have been restored to a youthful healthy state.
On one particular day it was unlike most days at Rainbow Bridge , this day dawned cold and gray, damp as a swamp and as dismal as could be imagined. All of the recent arrivals had no idea what to think, as they had never experienced a day like this before.
But the animals who had been waiting for their beloved people knew exactly what was going on and started to gather at the pathway leading to The Bridge to watch.
It wasn’t long before an elderly dog came into view, head hung low and tail dragging. The other animals, the ones who had been there for a while, knew what his story was right away, for they had seen this happen far too often.
He approached slowly, obviously in great emotional pain, but with no sign of injury or illness. Unlike all of the other animals waiting at The Bridge, this animal had not been restored to youth and made healthy and vigorous again! As he walked toward The Bridge, he watched all of the other animals watching him. He knew he was out of place here and the sooner he could cross over, the happier he would be.
But, alas, as he approached The Bridge, his way was barred by the appearance of an Angel who apologized, but told him that he would not be able to pass. Only those animals who were with their people could pass over Rainbow Bridge .
With no place else to turn to, the elderly animal turned towards the fields before The Bridge and saw a group of other animals like himself, also elderly. They weren’t playing, but rather simply lying on the green grass, forlornly staring out at the pathway leading to The Bridge. And so, he took his place among them, watching the pathway and waiting.
One of the newest arrivals at The Bridge didn’t understand what he had just witnessed and asked one of the animals that had been there for a while to explain it to him.
“You see, that poor animal was abandoned by his owners. He was turned into a shelter just as you see him now, an older animal with his fur graying and his eyes clouding. He never made it out of the shelter and passed on. Because he had no family to give his love to, he has no one to escort him across The Bridge. ”
The first animal thought about this for a minute and then asked, “So what will happen now?”
As he was about to receive his answer, the clouds suddenly parted and the gloom lifted.
Approaching The Bridge could be seen a single person and among the older animals, a whole group was suddenly bathed in a golden light and they were all young and healthy again, just as they were in the prime of life.
“Watch, and see” said the second animal.
A second group of animals from those waiting came to the pathway and bowed low as the person neared. At each bowed head, the person offered a pat on the head or a scratch behind the ears. The newly restored animals fell into line and followed him towards The Bridge.
They all crossed The Bridge together.
“What happened?”
“That was a rescuer. The animals you saw bowing in respect were those who found new homes because of his work. They will cross when their new families arrive. Those you saw restored were those who never found homes. When a rescuer arrives, they are allowed to perform one, final act of rescue. They are allowed to escort those poor animals that they couldn’t place on earth, across The Rainbow Bridge. ”
“I think I like rescuers,” said the first animal.
“So does GOD,” was the reply.

Voting rights are under attack all over the country, and Missouri is no exception. Missouri voters have had the right to pass laws directly by initiative petition since 1907, and, until recently, those laws were respected by members of the state legislature. Sadly, that is no longer the case. Missouri legislators are more likely to overturn or rewrite a law passed by the people than legislators in any other state. It's time for voters to demand that elected officials respect the will of the people. We can do this by passing the Your Vote Counts Act next November.

Your Vote Counts is a grassroots effort to require a three-fourths vote in both houses of the state assembly when legislators want to disregard a people-sponsored law. This is not a partisan issue. In fact, the protection of laws passed by initiative petition will benefit voters of all political stripes. That is why the Your Vote Counts coalition includes groups as diverse as Citizens in Charge, Americans for Limited Government, ASPCA, National Taxpayers Union and the Humane Society of the United States.

Critics of Your Vote Counts are trying to confuse voters by claiming it is "just the puppy mill opponents" who felt betrayed by the immediate revision of the care standards law passed by Missouri voters last year. But one of the two co-chairs of the effort is former Lt. Gov. Joe Maxwell who worked for three years on the alternative energy issue only to see legislators discard the new law passed by voters. In 2009, officials undid a school funding measure that passed as part of the casino initiative. In 2006, 76 percent of voters approved a new minimum wage law only to see the legislators with more loyalty to corporations than to workers try to change that law. They weren't successful this past year, but they will surely be trying again in 2012.

Earlier this year Purina helped the group’s current shelter with a makeover. New windows were installed, along with curtains. The entire outside of the building was painted.
Tuesday was the second time that some longtime volunteers remember gathering outside Five Acres Animal Shelter (formerly St. Charles Humane Society) for a ground breaking ceremony for a new facility.But on Tuesday afternoon, Kris Pals, president of the Board of Directors for the nonprofit, told a crowd of about 35 that the new facility would soon be a reality.
A 4,000-square foot building for dogs is expected to be completed in the spring."Our dream will be realized," he said. "The square footage that we will have will more than double the number of dogs we can bring into the shelter."The current facility holds about 25 to 30 dogs. A separate building on the property can house about 60 cats.
In 2007, the organization got approval from the city council to build a 5,000 square foot shelter and held a groundbreaking ceremony. However, by 2009, donations for the project had slowed and the nonprofit was struggling to pay for essentials. Staff was cut to just seven from 15 and the hours were reduced.

Generous bequests allowed the organization to this year announce a $1 million capital campaign to pay for the new dog facility along with the name change to Five Acres Animal Shelter. On Tuesday, Pals said that the organization had raised $600,000 toward that goal."We will be able to build this new facility without any debt at all, so it will be a cash deal and it’s great to know," he said.
The new facility will have a lobby area, three rooms in which families and dogs can get acquainted, space for commercial washers and dryers, a food prep area, kennels, and a grooming area.Kim Brown, director of Five Acres Animal Shelter, said the size of the building would allow them to turn away fewer people and animals. The group is able to rescue 550 animals every year.
"We can't help them all," she said. "We don't have the space to do it. For some who come here, it's their second chance, but it's kind of their only chance."Brown said those animals that the shelter cannot accept are often dumped on a country road or euthanized in one of the municipal animal facilities."It's important that we step up and are able to grow and meet the demand we're faced with," she said.Volunteer Mary Alwes said this was her second time attending a ground breaking for the shelter, but added that this time she hopes it will really happen."It was just the economy," she said. "We kept hanging in there and hoping things would turn around."
Alwes said she's looking forward to the next project for the nonprofit–renovating the feline facility."I'm hoping they can add more space," she said.
St. Louis Blues player David Backes and wife Kelly are members of the board of directors and, according to volunteers, have been a key part of raising awareness of the organization. Backes said they wanted to be a part of something that they were passionate about.Joining Backes at the ground breaking were Cardinal's pitcher Kyle McClellan and new-Marlin Mark Buehrle, who is from St. Charles.Backes said the sports community in St. Louis is supportive.
"You can all come together and you can accomplish great things," he said.

While no adverse health effects related to these products have been reported, Advanced Animal Nutrition is implementing this recall as a precautionary measure. Aflatoxin is a naturally occurring mold by-product. Cops: Bloody paw prints lead police to woman abusing dog

A woman who said she "no longer wanted" her dog was charged with animal abuse after letting it out in the cold today in the East Garfield Park neighborhood where children apparently beat it with broomsticks and baseball bats, police said.

Police responded to a 911 call of animal abuse about 6 p.m. in the 600 block of North Drake Avenue and found several children were trying to hit the dog with baseball bats and broomsticks, according to a police report.

The children fled and officers followed the bloody paw prints of the tan terrier mix up to its home, where the dog began barking and scratching at the door, the report said.

Ads by GoogleOfficers found the dog's owner, Lashon Parks, 42, hadn't been giving the animal water or food and had left it outside in temperatures below 25 degrees for an unidentified amount of time, police said.

Parks told officers that she owned the dog for ten years but no longer wanted it and allowed a relative to let it loose outside to "get rid of it," the report said.

She was charged with failure to comply with an animal owner's duties and cruelty to animals, both of which are misdemeanors, according to police. Parks is expected to appear in court Jan. 23, 2012.

The animal is currently in stable condition, according to Animal Care & Control Asst. Director Brad Powers. The dog will be evaluated by that department's medical staff on an ongoing basis, including a full examination by one of the staff veterinarians

Missouri dog food maker issues recall of 3 dry foods

THAYER, MO (AP) - A Missouri-based company is recalling three dry dog food products because of high levels of the fungus toxin aflatoxin.

Advanced Animal Nutrition of Thayer, Mo., on Friday voluntarily recalled 50-pound bags each of Dog Power Adult Maintenance Formula 21-12, Dog Power Hunters Formula 27-14, and Dog Power Hi-Pro Performance Formula 26-18.

The company says no illnesses have been reported. The products were distributed in Missouri, Arkansas and Louisiana. Consumers can return the products to the place of purchase for a full refund.

The recall applies to products with the packaging codes K0004 through K1322.

Aflatoxin is a naturally occurring chemical that comes from a fungus sometimes found on corn and in other crops. It can cause severe liver damage and in rare cases death.

I know we are suppose to be Man's Best Friend but I have to admit I prefer dogs to people any day. I must admit you people spoil me rotten but some of you are so messed up like the hillbillies that run PUPPY MILLS and sell puppies on the Internet, pet stores, parking lots, flea markets and anywhere they can trick people into thinking they have the parent dogs at home in a loving home when in reality they are crammed in a tiny cage they can never leave without any care or love given to them and more times than not with over 200 dogs side by sidein cages and stacked cage after cage exposed to freezing cold weather and sultry heat. Shame on people who can justify this for PROFIT. Your time is coming to an end as your industry is being exposed one city at a time and maybe your tiny little town hasn't felt it yet but Americans have opened their eyes to this terrible reality and it is just a matter of time !!!

A couple of weeks ago, we published a chart with the codes of Iams pet food
that, rumor said, was being recalled because of high levels of aflatoxin. Iams
denied the recall, which later was identified as a “product pull” that one of
the distributors mistakenly leaked to the outside world. (A product pull is, as
I understand, what a company does when it pulls the product from shelves before
it’s sold to the public.)
But now it’s official — The incident has become a recall. Procter &
Gamble announced today it is retrieving a lot of dry dog food due to aflatoxin
levels detected above the acceptable limit. According to the company, the Iams
ProActive Health Smart Puppy dry dog food has already been retrieved from store
shelves, and no illnesses have been reported in association with this production
lot to date. But you can have one of those bags at home. The affected product
lot was distributed to retailers in the eastern United States (AL, CT, DE, FL,
GA, LA, MD, ME, MS, NC, NH, NJ, NY, PA, SC, VA). So, please check the codes on
your bags if you buy Iams dog food.
