The closure of so many cruel puppy mills has resulted in 50,000 less dogs suffering a lifetime of misery in a Missouri puppy mill. Additionally, there are several hundred thousand less puppies being produced each year due to this reduction of 50,000 breeding dogs and, therefore, less dogs being neglected and abandoned and contributing to the pet overpopulation problem in the country.
We can also be thankful that those dogs that are still housed in commercial dog breeding facilities are receiving dramatically better living conditions under the new law. Dogs now have substantially increased living space, receive an annual veterinarian examination, no longer have to live on wire flooring, and have unfettered access to the outdoors. It is gratifying that due to more stringent enforcement of our commercial breeding laws, these dogs will have much better oversight to ensure their humane care and treatment.
Thankfully, with your support, the Missouri Alliance for ANimal Legislation has been able to persevere in its long, hard battle against puppy mill abuse and in its efforts to improve standards of care and gain more stringent enforcement of our laws protecting dogs. We are finally seeing the results of your generosity and your involvement in support of the Alliance's work. Progress has been hard and slow but the results have been truly overwhelming!
Now is the time for us to work even harder to continue this momentum. By being more visible, more vocal and more committed than ever before, we can send a clear message that we have no intention of backing down and that we will continue to fight for the humane treatment of all animals in the state.
THAT IS WHY WE ARE ASKING FOR YOUR HELP TODAY !!!
The 2014 legislative session begins in January. Our success has been so great that the dog breeders and agricultural interests are frantic and are vigorously fighting back and attempting to repeal our laws, not only protecting puppy mill dogs, but all animals. It has already been announced that the Legislature will be working on efforts to eliminate safeguards for the humane treatment of farm animals. Such an effort was only defeated on the last night of the legislative session this past May.
Several influential legislators have declared it a priority next year to pass legislation to eliminate the disposition process for abused and neglected animals. This legislation is being introduced at the request of the former Speaker Pro Tem whose mother operates a commercial dog breeding facility (that Hudson knows has been on the Better Business Bureau's Dirty Dozen list of the 12 worst puppy mills in Missouri , look it up yourself MaryAnn Smith is the mom). This proposed legislation would allow abused and neglected animals to remain in the hands of their abusers and permit dogs to continue to suffer in cruel puppy mills by eliminating the ability for a judge to permanently remove these animals when there is proof of abuse and neglect.
This upcoming legislative session will be critical as we fight to preserve our victories and to continue our efforts to protect all animals in the state. We very much need you financial help to maintain our advocacy efforts in Jefferson City to defend our hard fought victories on behalf of the animals. We could not accomplish what we do without your generous support.
During the 2014 session, we will propose an expansion of the Large Carnivore Act to include protection of primates, as well as work to eliminate the license fees on rescues and shelters.
The Alliance operates throughout Missouri in a number of ways in support of our legislative work. Your gift also helps to fund our education, outreach, and advocacy efforts that are so vital to our success on behalf of the animals in our state. As the only organization dedicated to animal welfare legislation in Missouri, we survive solely on individual donations.
PLEASE CONSIDER A FINANCIAL CONTRIBUTION TODAY TO HELP THE ALLIANCE CONTINUE TO SPEAK FOR THOSE WHO HAVE NO VOICE. PLEASE HELP US HELP THE ANIMALS.
I am confident that we can prevail with your help !
Thank You,
Bob B
