LAKELAND | The Petland store in Lakeland Square mall has permanently closed following the arrest of its owner.
A metal grate blocked entrance to the store Friday morning, and a small printed sign read, "CLOSED TODAY. SORRY FOR THE INCONVENIENCE." Christopher Beth, a business consultant for the chain, supervised a few employees inside the darkened store in removing merchandise and preparing to remove the animals still at the store.
A Petland spokeswoman says it is permanently closed.
Wendy Carrier, the store's owner, was arrested Wednesday on charges involving fraudulent pet certificates. Her husband, Christopher Carrier, a veterinarian with Care Animal Clinic in Lakeland, was arrested on similar charges.
