MAAL SPEAKS OUT .......

 YOUR HELP NEEDED NOW!

Please contact your state senator and let him/her know that you are opposed to HJR 11 and SJR 22.  These bills would prohibit ballot initiatives on all animal welfare issues. Mislabeled as "Right to Farm," these bills are intended to protect factory farms and puppy mills from any future regulations on the care of their animals. In addition these bills would eliminate all current regulations of factory farms by local municipalities and counties. In fact, SJR 22 would even jeopardize the current Canine Cruelty Prevention Act which regulates the care of dogs in puppy mills.

Please tell your state senator that ballot initiatives are necessary to improve animal welfare in the state. Remind your senator that our current cockfighting prohibition was enacted into law only by a ballot initiative after years of the Legislature failing to pass a law criminalizing this barbaric activity. Our recently passed Canine Cruelty Prevention Act, which dramatically improved standards of care for breeding dogs, only came about as a result of the Prop B ballot initiative, which raised the issue of puppy mill cruelty and pressured the Legislature to finally act on this important issue.

Without ballot initiatives, Missouri would be the only state in the country where cockfighting and animal baiting events would be legal and it would retain its title of "puppy mill capital of the country." These bills eliminate control of factory farms and will allow Missouri to become the center of farm animal abuse with no recourse to correct these abuses by ballot initiatives.

It is imperative that you contact your state senator and let him/her know that you care about the humane treatment of animals. A St. Louis County legislator recently stated that no one in his district cares about animal welfare. We need to let the Legislature know that people do care!
