Legislative Update in Chicago From The Puppy Mill Project ....

Cropped
Legislative Update:
Companion Animal and Consumer Protection Ordinance

.

Please join City Clerk Susana A. Mendoza, The Puppy Mill Project, and a growing coalition of Chicago aldermen to help pass an ordinance to promote animal adoption, end the sale of puppy mill dogs in Chicago, and protect our citizens!
The Companion Animal and Consumer Protection ordinance limits the retail sale of dogs and cats from pet stores to animals sourced from government-run shelters (such as Chicago Animal Care and Control) and nonprofit rescue organizations or humane societies.
We are honored to have worked with Clerk Mendoza on this initiative.
We need your help to pass this legislation. We must show the Chicago City Council that the public supports this ordinance. You can help by doing the following:
If you live outside of Chicago, please ask your friends and family in Chicago to contact the aldermen listed above and thank them for supporting the ordinance. Only city of Chicago residents should contact the aldermen.

It is very important to let Chicago's leaders know that the public overwhelmingly supports this ordinance! Please help us send a message and make Chicago the next humane city!

National Mill Dog Rescue Does Amazing Work !!!

After years of neglect....this is what dogs from puppy mills look like....their breeding machines to make money for these millers who supply cute little puppies for pet stores....please adopt from a shelter instead of buying from these so called breeders and pet stores..it is all about supply and demand.....let's together stop the suffering!!

Don't Let Your Children Treat Your Animals Badly....

There are so many ridiculous excuses people try to justify giving their dogs up to shelters and rescues but the one that slays me is when it comes to letting their children abuse the family pet then when it finally lets the children know it has had enough the family immediately wants to heartlessly cart it off to a shelter or rescue. This same family will feel their actions were 100% justified when in reality if they would of supervised their children and taught their children how to try their animals with respect and kindness then none of this had to happen. Please teach your children how to treat animals with kindness and better yet don't ADOPT a dog until your children are AT THE VERY LEAST 8 years or older.

So Many Creative Ways To Help Stop Puppy Mills ...

Here is a fabulous way to educate the public on Puppy Mills: Simply when you are ordering checks have them print
PET STORE PUPPIES COME FROM PUPPY MILLS
ADOPT THROUGH A SHELTER OR RESCUE
below your dollar line. It shouldn't cost you a penny and is such a fabulous way to educate the public !!!

One of the Sweet Puppy Mill Dogs That Mom Rescued........

Meet Sweet Pippa who for 8 years lived a life of sheer misery trapped in a puppy mill in Missouri.
She never left her cage and never knew a human that could be kind of loving to her. She lived 24 hours of day stuck in a tiny cage, never given love or toys. Her feet never got to feel grass or solid ground under them. She lived her entire life in a wire cage in conditions that were beyond miserable.
She survived conditions that were beyond inhuman until she was sold for $12.00 at a Puppy Mill Dispersal Sale. A rescue bought her and got her to a vet who had to remove 26 of her teeth that were rotting out and get her up to date on shots and spayed. Then this amazing women named Nancy adopted her and her life changed....
Pippa found out that humans can be kind and loving but she was too scared to respond to this love for a long time. Nancy had patience and a heart of gold that adored animals. Pippa is nuts about Nancy and her new pack. Nancy even knits her outfits and buys her amazing clothes and collars. Pippa is learning to trust people again !!!
Nancy even adopted Jenny whose mom died. Pippa loves her sisters and brother. Pippa adores her new life thanks to Nancy. Won't you consider ADOPTING YOUR NEXT PET !!!
This is Nancy's dog room where her precious pups are treated with kindness beyond your imagination!!!
Hudson thanks all the incredible people who open their hearts and homes to animals in need.
Please consider adopting your next pet at a local shelter or rescue or animal control near you !!!

This year, celebrities who don’t take home the Oscar Gold at the March 2nd Oscars Awards are still winners in the pet community!
Oscar host Ellen DeGeneres’ pet food company, Halo, Purely for Pets, in partnership with Freekibble.com, is giving 20 non-winning Oscar nominees 10,000 meals of natural pet food to donate to the animal shelter or rescue of the celebrity’s choice.
The gift is part of the coveted $55,000 nominee "Everyone Wins at the Oscars®" gift bags from Distinctive Assets that will console non-winning Oscar nominees in the Best Actor/Actress, Supporting Actor/Actress and Director categories with an array of special products and services.
The Halo and Freekibble.com gift makes a notable departure from the typical expensive gift bag products geared toward leisure time and pampering and taps into the penchant of many celebrities for giving.
With this in mind, the 10,000-meal donation to the animal rescue or shelter of the recipient’s choice is one of the most expensive items in the gift bag, a $6,100 retail value.
“We know many celebrities are extremely generous,” said David Yaskulka, Halo’s vice president of marketing communications. “So we decided to gift them with something different that we think will mean a lot to them. We’re looking forward to making those donations!”
Celebrity recipients will also receive some Halo Spot’s Stew food and Liv-a-Littles treats for their own pets to enjoy.
In addition to Halo and Freekibble.com’s donation, lucky “losers” will receive luxury items like Chocolatines chocolate, Slow Watches, the PolarLoop activity tracker, luxury trips and more.
We can’t wait to see which lucky shelters and rescues will benefit from these A-Lister’s food donations!

Animal Testing Is So Cruel .....

This is animal testing.

This is EXTREME animal CRUELTY!

Toxicity testing is where dogs are exposed to a chemical by skin, mouth or inhalation. One test is called Lethal Dose 50 (LD50). Large numbers of dogs are given the chemical and the test is complete when half of the dogs are dead.

Another testing method is complete when the dogs show signs of suffering. The beagles endure excruciating pain, convulsions, they lose their motor functions, and have uncontrollable seizures. They are still killed in the end.

How AN ANIMAL Rescuer Feels

The neglect changes you.
The abuse hardens you.
The suffering breaks you.
The ignorance angers you.
The indifference disturbs you.
The injustice destroys you.
On a daily basis…your faith will be tested.
Your heart will be wounded....
Your soul will be altered.
On a weekly basis…you’ll question yourself.
You’ll question your strength.
You’ll question the world.
On a monthly basis…you’ll fall down.
You’ll get up.
You’ll go on…
On a yearly basis…you’ll look back…
You’ll see faces…
You couldn’t save them.
You’ll learn to mourn.
To grieve.
To sob.
You’ll learn to trust a little less.
To do a little more.
To fight a little harder.
You’ll learn to try.
To hope.
To pray.
You’ll learn to fail.
To succeed.
To accept.
You’ll learn when to hold on.
When to give up.
When to let go.
You’ll learn who you are.
What you stand for.
Why that matters.
Then… at times… you’ll forget why you matter.

You’ll question what you’re doing.
You’ll wonder if it’s worth it.
But…here’s the good news…
When you forget…
When you question…
When you wonder…
All you have to do…
Is take a look around…
And you’ll see them.
You’ll see their faces.
You’ll see their smiles.
You’ll feel their love.
In their eyes, you’ll see their journeys…
You’ll remember their beginnings…You’ll know how far they’ve come…
You’ll remember when they didn’t know you…
When they didn’t trust you…When they’d given up.
You’ll remember how you healed them…
How you loved them…How they loved you, too.
And as you look back…
You’ll want to move forward…
For them… and because of them.
In your darkest hours, you’ll look around…To find the differences made…the hope given…and the lives saved…
Because you existed.
In those moments, when you look into their eyes…every doubt will be erased.
Every question will be answered.
Every worry will subside.
Because in that instant…in each of your hearts…
You both share the very same thought:
“Every bit of pain was worth it…for this moment here with you.”
And honestly…no matter what else happens…
Those moments hold all the strength you need…
To keep going.
Rescue is pain.
Rescue is joy.
Rescue is worth it…because they are worth it.
And that’s the honest truth.

A Puppy Mill Is .....

What is a puppy mill?

As defined by the Humane Society of the United States, "Puppy mills are breeding facilities that produce purebred puppies in large numbers. The puppies are sold either directly to the public via the Internet, newspaper ads, at the mill itself, or are sold to brokers and pet shops across the country.

The documented problems of puppy mills include over breeding, inbreeding, minimal veterinary care, poor quality of food and shelter, lack of socialization with humans, overcrowded cages, and the killing of unwanted animals. To the unwitting consumer, this situation frequently means buying a puppy facing an array of immediate veterinary problems or harboring genetically borne diseases that do not appear until years later.

Sadly, some dogs are forced to live in puppy mills their entire lives. They are kept there for one reason only: to produce more puppies. Repeatedly bred, many of these "brood bitches" are killed once their reproductive capacity wanes. Thousands of these breeding operations currently exist in the United States."

The farming of dogs is an American disgrace. Take a stand against this industry. Do not purchase puppies in pet stores or on the Internet. Do your homework before you purchase a puppy. Better yet, visit your local shelter or rescue group and adopt a dog who already has no place to call home. Take pride in rescuing your dog and ask all of your dog-loving friends to do the same. It is high time to put an end to the pain and suffering forced upon the wonderful creatures that we call "man's best friends".

Evening Of Champions......

 — The public appearance in Raleigh by NFL quarterback Michael Vick that drew protests and petitions by animal rights groups won't happen after all.
Vick was scheduled to keynote the annual Greater Raleigh Sports Council's Evening of Champions on Wednesday.
On Tuesday, with winter weather in the forecast, the Raleigh Chamber rescheduled the event for Thursday, Feb. 27.
"We had hoped that our special guest interviewee, Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Michael Vick, would be available on the 27th, but we have been advised that he can’t be in Raleigh on that date due to a previously scheduled engagement," the Chamber said in a statement accompanying the schedule change.
Vick served almost two years in federal prison on charges related to a dog-fighting ring run out of a property he owned in Virginia. Since completing his sentence, he has worked with the Humane Society of the United States. In speaking engagements, he has expressed remorse for his role in dog fighting and has become an advocate for the humane treatment of animals.
Vernessa Roberts, a spokeswoman for the Raleigh Chamber, said that organizers recognized Vick might be a controversial choice.
"Our decision to have Michael Vick as our speaker at the Evening of Champions was made knowing that some would disagree, but our steering committee felt that his career story offers our guests an informative perspective about the excesses of fame and money in celebrity culture. His presentation includes how he made very significant mistakes and how he has learned from the consequences of his actions and subsequently changed his life. His conviction and subsequent reinstatement to the NFL were one of the biggest stories in sports. We believe he has an important message to share," Roberts said.
Vick's invitation spurred online petitions and a planned protest by several groups including The Positive Pit Bull, Southern Belle Pit Bull Rescue, South of the Bully Pit Bull Rescue and Merit Pit Bull Foundation. The groups' petition on Change.org, asking that Vick's invitation be revoked, had more than 70,000 signatures.
Registrations for the Evening of Champions will transfer to Feb. 27, the Chamber said. Anyone who can't make that date can request a refund via email to hcorn@raleighchamber.org. No refunds will be issued after Feb. 17.

St. Louis, Missouri Average animals killed at SHELTERS/Animal Control every year !!!

An average of 20,000 dogs/cats are killed right here in St. Louis each year --- 2.7 million in the US annually. Spay/neuter and an end to disreputable puppy mills would be a step in the right direction.

Heartwarming Puppy Mill Rescue Story .....

I wanted to share our recent rescue story with you. Ashli has a high school friend in our hometown of Mt Vernon IL who fosters bulldogs for a rescue out of Chicago. Last week she posted asking Ashli and another classmate living in the Nashville area if they could help with transport of a dog in need of rescue. Holly picked up the dog and we met her in Nashville since we already had a trip home planned Fri night. What I did not know until we met her was that she picked the dog up from the owner of the puppy mill. The dog had been advertised on Ebay and the rescue sent Holly the money to buy the dog. The owner had no idea it was a rescue purchase. Poor girl is in need of some TLC and hopefully she will be OK. She made the trip with no problems and they met us at our hotel. I had no idea that rescues actually buy these dogs to save them from puppy mills! She was 6 years old and looked like she had been bred a lot. But no more! God Bless you for all your hard work and keep on fighting against puppy mills.

Breastfeed Puppy To Keep Him Alive....

Woman Breastfeeds Puppy To Save Its Life Posted: 02/07/2014 5:03 pm EST Updated: 02/07/2014 5:59 pm EST Print Article MORE: Breastfeeding Dog Puppy Breastfeeds Woman Breasts Dog Breastfeeding Puppy Woman Breastfeeds Puppy Weird News When a puppy that she was fostering refused to eat anything, a Colorado woman says she did the only thing that she felt would save his life: breastfeeding the sickly pup from her own breast. “I just felt like he just had an hour left. That’s how weak he was, he wasn’t moving and I just did it,” the woman, whose identity has not been revealed, told local news outlet KRDO-TV of her decision to breastfeed the dog. "I didn’t know what else to do, I was desperate and I just couldn’t bear sitting there watching it die." The puppy, according to KRDO, is the runt of a litter of orphaned pups that the woman fostered. She has a 15-month-old child and admits that she felt "weird" about breastfeeding the dog, but she insists that the puppy would've died had she not taken action. The puppy is reportedly now doing much better and is no longer being breastfed. According to KRDO, a photograph of the puppy suckling on the woman's breast has been making the rounds on the Internet after the woman posted the picture on her personal Facebook page with an explanation of why she chose to breastfeed the dog. While many netizens wondered why the woman didn't rush the pup to a vet before choosing to breastfeed it, some leapt to her defense. "I think it's great she did that to save the puppy, why not?" wrote a commenter on KRDO's website.

Best Friends Animal Society Wants Rights of Dog Owners Protected.....

Best Friends Animal Society MO: You can help families and their pets by supporting HB 1116 in Committee. Send the General Laws Committee an email today! Take Action! Dear Members and Friends, Right now, it’s legal for local governments in Missouri to restrict people’s right to have any dog breed or breed mix they choose. That’s something that very few Americans agree with. In fact, a whopping 84% of Americans feel that federal, state and local governments shouldn’t be allowed to tell people what breed of dog they can or cannot have. HB 1116 protects Missouri citizens’ freedom to choose whatever breed of dog they like. A hearing will be held in the General Laws Committee, Tuesday, February 11, at noon. Please take action today by calling your state House representative and letting him or her know that you support this bill. To call, you can find out who your state representative is at this link: http://www.house.mo.gov/. Also, please express your support by sending an email to all the General Laws Committee members. It only takes a few moments. Thanks so much for your help. Together, we can Save Them All®. Chicago, Illinois Is Feed Up With Puppy Millers......

PUPPY MILLS HAVE A TRACK RECORD OF MISTREATING ANIMALS Many consumers unwittingly support the puppy mill industry. An estimated 99 percent of dogs sold in retail stores are from puppy mills where industrial scale breeding takes place to maximize profit. As man’s best friend, dogs have served as companion animals for ages. They serve the public by helping our first responders. There’s no acceptable level of neglect of these animals. Please support this important legislation to show Chicago is a forward-thinking and compassionate City when it comes to our pets. To learn more about how you can help support the Companion Animal & Consumer Protection Ordinance, please read the press release on our website: http://chicityclerk.com/clerk-news/companion-animal/ or contact the Office of the City Clerk at 312-744-2507.

13 Things That Happen When You Date A Girl Who Loves Her Dog.....Obsessively like mine do !!!

13 Things That Happen When You Date A Girl Who Loves Her Dog JAN. 22, 2014 By CHRISSY STOCKTON info Shutterstock Shutterstock 1. You will never, ever be positive that you are more loved than her beloved pooch. 2. When you are snuggling on the couch, it’s perfectly acceptable for the dog, even one that weighs upwards of 100lbs, to jump up and carve out a nest for himself between the two of you. 3. You’ve heard her on more than one occasion refer to her pet as “the man in my life.” 4. You don’t worry about her straying, dog lovers are fiercely loyal and not the sort of people who get pleasure from hurting others. 5. You know all the scenic areas around your girlfriend’s house because she likes to take you there (with the dog, of course). 6. You’ve given up on arguing that the dog cannot sleep in the bed. Shutterstock Shutterstock 7. You’ll go a few days without seeing her, and somehow still find a dog hair on your desk. 8. You have seen literally thousands of pictures of her dog via Instagram, Facebook, and lots of texts that say “OMG look what Waffles just did!” 9. When she is talking to the dog, you are referred to as “daddy.” 10. Nothing is cuter than catching the two of them taking a nap together. 11. You’ve suddenly got a lot more energy for everything just by close proximity to dog energy. 12. She’s one of the most independent girls you’ve dated. Dog lovers take after their pooches and love to explore. 13. You wonder how you thought you weren’t a dog person before you met her. TC mark

One of our photographers returning to the Indianapolis International Airport took this photo of a soldier getting special guard duty from man's best friend as she catches a nap in the terminal. About 10 soldiers and two dogs were in a group at the airport tonight. It wasn't clear if they were coming home or heading out, but we thank them (and the dogs!) for their service!
