The Final Arguments Hearing has been scheduled for Wednesday July 1st at 8:30 AM regarding Mary Gabriel’s basement kennel which is allegedly violating the local zoning ordinance that does not permit a kennel in the basement or inside the home on. If you are a local resident, please join us.
On July 24th, 2014 Judge Brady heard testimony from both the zoning inspector, Cheryl McGuire, and the next door neighbor who used to work at the prior kennel when he was a kid. He testified that the prior owner did not have a kennel in the basement (former garage). McGuire also testified the city has no records indicating that the kennel should be grandfathered, therefore it is a  nonconforming expansion. Gabriel was cited on October 29th 2013 and is fighting to keep the kennel that housed 30 golden retrievers last August during an inspection. It is unclear how many dogs are still in the basement.
On September 12th, Judge Brady heard testimony from William Kushner of Troy. He stated he visited the home in 1998 before purchase. He stated there were 4-5 dogs running around the home and mentioned some wooden kennels in the basement. It was not clear how many kennels and if these dogs were actually kenneled in the home or if they were the prior owner’s personal pets. He stated he is a friend of Mary Gabriels and has  purchased and taken dogs from her.
Puppy Mill Awareness of Southeast Michigan has been investigating Chien d'Or / Gabriels Ark Kennel.  We are most concerned that Ms. Gabriel is hoarding animals (dogs and birds) and operating a kennel with too many dogs. Last August, (57) adult golden retrievers were found on the property, some living in small wire cages in the basement and others overcrowded in an outdoor kennel. Public records show there has been at least (14)  complaints and (7) failed inspections since 2008.  Ms. Gabriel is a chronic offender with repeat  violations to Regulation 129 governing dog kennels. The deplorable conditions of the kennels have directly impacted the dog’s health violating state animal cruelty laws, yet no charges have been filed.
If you plan to attend, please RSVP and then confirm the morning of as all prior dates have been rescheduled.
